Piaffe - This diagonal movement is highly collected and cadenced as with the passage; however, it is done "in place." The horse's raised foreleg should again be raised to the middle of the opposing foreleg's cannon bone. The raised hind leg's toe should be slightly above the fetlock joint of the opposing hind leg. The piaffe should always remain lively and animated with the horse's body moving up and down in a relaxed, supple and cadenced manner. As with passage, the horse's neck should be arched with it's head in the vertical position.

I had a room full of Breyer statues and my Dad would take me trail riding whenever he could afford it. I grasped every opportunity to be around horses and when I couldn't, I would draw them. Throughout High School and College I worked at several barns cleaning stalls, grooming and tacking up horses, just to afford riding lessons. Marriage, family and a job transfer distracted me for about ten years. In 1996, my husband, Joe, brought horses into my life with the gift of riding lessons for my 30th birthday. Sometimes I think he dreads that gift, because it has been all about horses since then. Our two beautiful daughters...
