Schwung (Impulsion)
Impulsion is the term used to describe the transmission of an eager and energetic, yet controlled, propulsive thrust generated from the hindquarters into the athletic movement of the horse. Impulsion is associated with a phase of suspension such as exists in trot and canter, but not in walk. It is measured by the horse’s desire to carry himself forward, the elasticity of his steps, suppleness of his back, and engagement of his hindquarters. Impulsion is necessary to develop medium paces, and later on, with the added ingredient of collection, extended paces.

I had a room full of Breyer statues and my Dad would take me trail riding whenever he could afford it. I grasped every opportunity to be around horses and when I couldn't, I would draw them. Throughout High School and College I worked at several barns cleaning stalls, grooming and tacking up horses, just to afford riding lessons. Marriage, family and a job transfer distracted me for about ten years. In 1996, my husband, Joe, brought horses into my life with the gift of riding lessons for my 30th birthday. Sometimes I think he dreads that gift, because it has been all about horses since then. Our two beautiful daughters...
